Ribeiro Costa Dominates as PSL Awards 2025 Celebrate Season’s Best
Johannesburg, South Africa – Mamelodi Sundowns’ Brazilian maestro, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, was the undisputed star of the 2024/25 PSL Awards, held on Tuesday evening, July 29, 2025. Ribeiro Costa’s sensational season saw him sweep an impressive four individual accolades, cementing his place as one of the league’s most impactful players.
The glittering ceremony, which was postponed from its usual June slot due to Mamelodi Sundowns’ participation in the FIFA Club World Cup and CChampions League Final, finally recognized the outstanding achievements of players, coaches, and officials across various divisions.
Ribeiro Costa’s haul included the coveted PSL Footballer of the Season award, a testament to his electrifying performances throughout Sundowns’ league-winning campaign. He also walked away with the Players’ Player of the Season, voted for by his peers, the Goal of the Season for his stunning solo effort against Orlando Pirates, and the Top Goal Scorer award, having netted 16 goals in the domestic league.
While Sundowns celebrated their individual star, Orlando Pirates also had a night to remember, with several key players receiving recognition. Young sensation Relebohile Mofokeng was a double winner, claiming both the Young Player of the Season and the MTN8 Last Man Standing awards, highlighting his breakthrough season with the Buccaneers. Pirates’ defensive stalwarts were also honored, with Sipho Chaine named Goalkeeper of the Season, Nkosinathi Sibisi taking home Defender of the Season, and Makhehleni Makhaula recognized as the Midfielder of the Season.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ tactical mastermind, Miguel Cardoso, was rightfully crowned Coach of the Season. His astute leadership guided Masandawana to yet another dominant league title, their eighth consecutive.
In other notable awards, Kaizer Chiefs winger Pule Mmodi earned the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament award, while Orlando Pirates’ Mbekezeli Mbokazi was named the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament. Magesi FC’s Elvis Chipezeze’s outstanding performances in their fairytale cup run earned him the Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament accolade.
The Motsepe Foundation Championship also saw its stars celebrated, with Muzomuhle Khanyi of Hungry Lions winning both the Players’ Player of the Season and Top Goal Scorer awards. Teboho Lekhatla of Casric Stars was named Young Player of the Season, and Dumsani Msibi of Durban City received the Goalkeeper of the Season award.
The DStv Diski Challenge recognized Stellenbosch FC’s Tylon Smith as Player of the Season and Orlando Pirates’ Siphamandla Msezane as the Top Goal Scorer. Finally, Kgara Mokoena and Masixole Bambiso were honored as Assistant Referee and Referee of the Season, respectively.
The 2024/25 PSL Awards marked a fitting conclusion to a thrilling football season, celebrating the talent, dedication, and passion that continues to define South African football.
