Mahikeng parents are waking up to a shocking reality as Molema Memorial Primary School opens today — even though the building is far from safe. With parts of the school still roofless and infrastructure in disrepair, many parents are left torn: do they risk sending their children into potentially dangerous classrooms, or take them home and risk falling behind in lessons?

One worried parent, Reatlegile Keamogetse Molefe, captured the fear perfectly on social media, saying: “I don’t know whether to leave my kids at school or take them home. There’s no roof and it’s not safe!”

The sight of broken classrooms and exposed ceilings has left families anxious. Teachers are reportedly doing their best under unsafe conditions, but the bigger question remains: why is the school opening before repairs are complete? Safety experts warn that children could be at serious risk from falling debris or exposed areas.

Parents now face an impossible choice, weighing their children’s education against their physical safety. The North West Department of Education has not commented on whether the school was inspected or deemed safe to open.

As the first day unfolds, the tension is palpable. One thing is clear: Mahikeng families feel abandoned and frustrated, forced to make a decision no parent should ever have to face.
