South Africa has taken a significant step toward hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix as early as 2026. The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) has opened an expression of interest for potential venues to present their plans for consideration.
On Friday, the DSAC’s Formula 1 Bid Steering Committee released a document inviting proposals from venues interested in hosting the prestigious event. This process aims to identify the best location to potentially host a Grand Prix for a decade, starting in 2026 or 2027.
According to the document, seen by The Race, the chosen venue and promoter will submit a formal bid to the FIA and Formula 1, with the necessary support and approvals from the DSAC. The committee emphasized the need for an iconic location that meets international standards.
While Kyalami, the historic home of the South African Grand Prix, is widely regarded as the frontrunner, the process remains open to other potential venues. Cape Town has also been rumored as a possible contender.
The criteria for selection include proximity to a major city, with the circuit being no more than 30 minutes away. The location should also offer a visually striking backdrop to enhance the prestige of the event. Furthermore, the track must deliver an exciting racing experience, featuring opportunities for wheel-to-wheel action and multiple overtaking possibilities.
South Africa’s efforts to bring back the Grand Prix, last held in 1993, have gained momentum. At a press conference in December at Kyalami, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie highlighted the country’s commitment to securing the event. He mentioned ongoing discussions with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and reiterated his belief that Kyalami is the best choice for the race.
“The race is going to happen at Kyalami,” McKenzie told Supersport. “Kyalami is doing everything necessary to meet F1 standards. Circuit bosses Toby and Willie Venter have invested significantly in upgrading the track, working with Apex to ensure compliance with F1 requirements. We’re confident it’s happening and aiming for 2027.”
The F1 Bid Steering Committee has set a January 31 deadline for expressions of interest, with a shortlist of candidates to be finalized within five days of the deadline.
This renewed push to host an F1 race in South Africa signals a strong commitment to bringing the iconic motorsport event back to the continent.
