The situation in Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, has reached critical levels as M23 rebels reportedly control a significant portion of the city after fierce battles with the Congolese army. The internet remains down, and only mobile networks are operational, making communication and aid coordination nearly impossible.
The UN World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis, with hospitals struggling to function as movement is severely restricted. “Even ambulances cannot run. It’s a nightmare for public health,” said Dr. Boureima Hama Sambo, WHO’s Representative in DRC.
Dire Conditions & Rising Health Risks
Goma’s residents face extreme hardship, with no running water or electricity, leaving thousands trapped, including medical staff. Before the latest clashes, over 700,000 displaced people lived around the city, but many have now fled, sparking fears of widespread disease outbreaks.
The situation has been described as “unimaginable” by UN officials, who are calling for urgent international action to halt the fighting between M23 rebels—allegedly backed by Rwanda—and DRC forces.
Deadly Disease Outbreaks on the Rise
With continued displacement, diseases like cholera (22,000+ cases, 60 deaths in 2024), measles (12,000 cases, 115 deaths), and malaria are spreading rapidly. WHO officials have also raised alarms over mpox, as infected individuals have fled treatment centers and may be spreading the virus within host communities.
Access to affected areas remains nearly impossible, leaving humanitarian workers unable to assess the full scale of the crisis. WHO and other agencies are urging immediate action to prevent further loss of life and worsening public health conditions in the war-torn region.
