Rustenburg is on fire—literally and politically—as chaos erupts in Karlien Park following a municipal crackdown on illegal electricity connections. What started as a routine disconnection by Rustenburg Local Municipality quickly turned into a violent clash, exposing deeper tensions between the City and informal residents.
According to a notice from the Rustenburg Local Municipality, the city is actively enforcing by-laws in Ward 13 and 43, especially around Zinniaville, Karlien Park, Noord, and other areas. These laws target backyard dwellings that aren’t officially registered or compliant with building and land-use regulations.
The municipality’s disconnection campaign, meant to ensure safety and proper service delivery, triggered a fierce response. Angry residents from the informal settlement allegedly retaliated by throwing petrol bombs and damaging municipal vehicles.
The situation has sparked concern among law-abiding residents, who fear for their safety and the security of municipal workers. The municipality has made it clear that any illegal business or dwelling risks having services like electricity and water disconnected—and offenders may face fines, demolition orders, and criminal charges.
Rustenburg officials are calling on residents to comply with building regulations and avoid unauthorized connections, warning that tampering with electricity meters or reconnecting services without permission is illegal.
The municipality also reminded the public that only authorized personnel may disconnect or reconnect services, and that interfering with municipal infrastructure is a criminal offense.
Residents are encouraged to submit their municipal account statement and business registration documents if they operate backyard dwellings, to avoid disconnection or penalties.
As law enforcement and municipal teams continue their work, the community hopes for a peaceful resolution and long-term solutions to the area’s housing challenges.
