DR Congo produced a determined performance to secure a draw against Portugal in their World Cup clash, earning a valuable point against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
The Leopards showed resilience throughout the match and were rewarded through Yoane Wissa, whose goal helped DR Congo stay level against the European giants.
Portugal enjoyed spells of possession and created opportunities, but they were unable to find the decisive goal needed to claim victory. A major talking point after the match was the performance of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was kept off the scoresheet despite leading Portugal’s attack.
DR Congo’s defensive organisation and commitment were key to the result. Time and again they managed to contain Portugal’s attacking threats while remaining dangerous on the counter attack.
The draw represents a significant achievement for the Leopards and could prove crucial as the group stage progresses. Taking points from a team of Portugal’s quality will provide confidence and belief heading into their remaining fixtures.
For Portugal, questions will be asked about their inability to convert chances and break down a disciplined Congolese defence.
