Ivory Coast made history by becoming the first African nation to win their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ecuador 1–0 in dramatic fashion.

The decisive moment came in the 90th minute when Amad calmly finished from the edge of the penalty area following an excellent cut back from Wilfried Singo. The goal capped off a hard fought performance from the Elephants and secured a vital three points in Group E.

The result was particularly remarkable given the flow of the game. Ecuador created the better opportunities for much of the match and struck the crossbar twice. However, the South Americans were unable to convert their chances, allowing Ivory Coast to remain in the contest.

As the game entered its final moments, Ivory Coast seized their opportunity. Singo’s run down the right flank created the opening, and Amad produced a composed finish that sparked celebrations among players and supporters alike.

The victory gives Ivory Coast a strong start to their World Cup campaign and marks an important milestone for African football at the tournament.
