It’s getting harder to believe we’re safe anywhere in South Africa — not even churches are off-limits anymore.
In a wild and disturbing turn of events, a group of gunmen stormed a church in Klipfontein, Witbank on Wednesday night during a service, tied everyone up, and kidnapped the pastor along with eight church members.
Yes, you read that right. People went to pray — and ended up being robbed and thrown into the back of their own cars at gunpoint.
Police say more than five armed men came in blazing, forcing everyone to lie down, tied them with cable ties, and looted phones, wallets, laptops and more. They even demanded PINs for the stolen phones and drove off with the victims in three of their own vehicles — a Mercedes-Benz, a Polo, and an Isuzu bakkie.
The gang drove them deep into the bush, where they were left under guard like hostages. Meanwhile, their families were left in the dark — literally and emotionally.
Luckily, SAPS teamed up with Tracker and managed to trace the vehicles that same night. All victims were found in a bushy area in Kromdraai — alive, but definitely shaken. Only one person was slightly injured and treated.
So far, two suspects have been arrested. One was caught in Vosman with the Benz, and the other in Silverton with the bakkie. The Polo was dumped.
But here’s the real question: how did we get here?
Places of worship — where people go for peace, prayer and healing — are now being turned into violent crime scenes. It’s no longer just robberies and housebreakings. Now, criminals don’t even blink before walking into a church and pointing guns at pastors.
Acting police boss in Mpumalanga, General Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the police work but admitted the reality is scary. “We’re deeply concerned,” he said. “Places like churches should be safe.”
But should we be applauding rescue missions — or demanding real change before things get even worse?
