North-West Parks and Tourism Board Launches Tourism Month 2024
The North-West Parks and Tourism Board is thrilled to announce the launch of Tourism Month 2024, kicking off a month-long celebration to spotlight the significance of tourism in the Platinum Province. This event will reveal the province’s exciting plans and initiatives for this year’s festivities.
Tourism Month, observed every September, highlights the critical role the tourism sector plays in driving South Africa’s economy and creating jobs. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Tourism and Peace – 30 Years of Connecting People, Places, and Culture.” This theme reflects the powerful impact tourism has had in fostering connections and understanding across communities over the past three decades.
During the launch event, attendees had the opportunity to engage with industry experts and learn how the North West Province is enhancing its tourism offerings to attract both local and international visitors.
“This month is more than just a celebration; it’s a powerful reminder of the richness found in our diverse landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and warm, welcoming people,” said Bitsa Lenkopane, MEC for Economic Development, Conservation, Environment, and Tourism. “From the golden savannas of Pilanesberg and the scenic Magaliesberg to the tranquil waters of Hartbeespoort Dam, the historical significance of the Taung Heritage Site, and the vibrant rhythm of our local communities—North West is a province that tells a story like no other.”
Lenkopane added, “Join us as we celebrate the power of tourism to unite people and promote peace through shared experiences. Let’s make Tourism Month 2024 a resounding success.”
As the global tourism industry recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been encouraging signs of growth. International arrivals surged from 415 million in 2021 to 917 million in 2022, and 1.286 billion in 2023. Despite this upward trend, the overall growth still reflects a 12% decline from pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This highlights the need for ongoing efforts to rebuild a more inclusive, sustainable tourism sector that aligns with the values of unity and resilience.
Lenkopane further urged everyone in the province to embrace this month as an opportunity to promote North West. “Let’s become ambassadors for our beautiful province—share our stories, support local businesses, and invite the world to experience the magic of the North West Province.”
Tourism, she noted, is not just about visiting places; it’s about connecting with people. “It’s in the laughter of children playing in our villages, the wisdom shared by our elders, the creativity of our artisans, and the warm greetings from local guides. These are the moments where visitors truly experience the essence of the North West as a destination.”
To further celebrate Tourism Month, all North West reserves and parks will offer free entry during Park Mahala Week from September 15th to 22nd (with the exception of Madikwe Nature Reserve). This initiative provides North West residents with a chance to explore the province’s incredible wildlife at no cost. Additionally, Park Mahala Week will create market access opportunities for local SMMEs, allowing young entrepreneurs to set up stalls at the parks to showcase and sell their products.
Visitors are invited to take a Sho’t Left to the North West and discover breathtaking attractions such as Hartbeespoort Dam, the Magaliesberg Mountain range, the Taung Heritage Site, The Cradle of Humankind, and Sun City Resort—North West’s premier tourist destination.
As we embark on this journey together, we do so with hope, joy, and a deep appreciation for the land and the people who bring it to life. Let Tourism Month 2024 be more than just a celebration—it should serve as a call to action to build a brighter, more vibrant future for the North West Province.
